hope simpson
Hope Simpson is a ceramicist originally from New Orleans and now living in Lafayette, LA while studying Anthropology at UL. Her ceramics practice is rooted in exploring ideas of grief, nostalgia, and memory through whimsical forms and imagery. She finds hand building and intricately glazing her pieces to be deeply meditative and grounding practices. She is most fulfilled through creating wall hangings and sculptures, but spends the majority of her practice making wearable and functional pieces, such as jewelry and mugs.
Hope is deeply influenced by her personal experience with grief, and her ceramics practice has made it possible for her to work through these difficult emotions while keeping them close to her heart. In a similar vein, she is greatly influenced by the wide variety of cultural uses of altars as focal points of ritual, ceremony, and expression. Utilizing both of these sources of inspiration has allowed her to create altars as a form of personal exploration and a site for individualized ceremony. Hope believes that anyone, regardless of skill level, is capable of getting to know themselves in this way through ceramics, and she is so excited to explore this in class!
